Gypsum Dunes Compared: Cuatro Ciénegas and White Sands
Key facts
Only three places on Earth have gypsum dunes on a significant scale: White Sands National Park in New Mexico, a site in Australia, and Cuatro Ciénegas in the Coahuila desert. If you have been to White Sands, or are choosing between the two, this comparison helps you decide by what matters for planning: distance, cost, crowds and what else you get for the trip.
Head to head, one factor at a time
Scale. White Sands covers 275 square miles (712 km²), with a loop road through it. Cuatro Ciénegas has roughly 800 hectares (about 3 square miles) of accessible dunes, much smaller yet enough for about two hours of walking. White Sands wins.
Sand. Both are fine, powder-like selenite that stays cool because gypsum absorbs less heat than silica. Barefoot walking is comfortable at either, and a photo cannot tell them apart. Tie.
Crowds. White Sands has over 600,000 visitors a year; on weekends and holidays parking fills by 10 am. On a typical Cuatro Ciénegas weekend the dunes hold dozens of people, so empty wide shots are easy. Cuatro Ciénegas wins clearly.
Photography. Both glow gold, orange and pink around sunset, and the useful window is roughly 45 minutes either side. The difference is background: White Sands has more dunes and desert, while Cuatro Ciénegas has the Sierra de la Madera turning blue behind the white foreground, which adds depth. Cuatro Ciénegas for composition.
What surrounds the dunes
White Sands is mostly the dune field itself. Nearby Alamogordo offers little, the park has no swimming and no wildlife encounters, and the geology beyond the dunes is limited. Lincoln National Forest and the missile range add history and outdoor options, but they are separate outings.
In Cuatro Ciénegas the dunes are one of five natural stops within 20 minutes of town:
- Río Los Mezquites: 26°C water and endemic soft-shell turtles (Apalone ater).
- Poza Azul: a 5.3 m turquoise lagoon with living stromatolites, some of the oldest life forms on Earth.
- Las Playitas: kayaking, birdwatching and stargazing.
- Marble mines: an abandoned 19th-century quarry with views and a night projection show.
- The Pueblo Mágico: colonial center with cabrito, mesquite honey and artisan cheese.
Visit the gypsum dunes at day’s end and you will already have swum with turtles and floated over ancient microbes. At White Sands the dunes are the whole outing. Cuatro Ciénegas wins decisively on variety.

Which one should you pick?
White Sands if you are already in New Mexico or passing through El Paso, want sheer scale, prefer a standard national park setup, or want to camp in the dunes.
Cuatro Ciénegas if you are coming from Texas or Monterrey, want more than dunes (swimming, a colonial town, dark skies), prefer thin crowds, or have already seen White Sands and want something new.
How to reach Cuatro Ciénegas
From Monterrey it is 320 km and about 3.5 to 4 hours, and a van with driver can pick up a group at home or at the airport so nobody has to drive after sunset at the dunes. From Texas, see our border and road notes. We provide the transfer only; park fees, guides and lodging are arranged locally.
Bottom line
White Sands is a world-class dune landscape. Cuatro Ciénegas is a world-class destination that happens to include comparable dunes. For the same drive time from Texas, it gives you far more, and everything beyond the dunes is a bonus. When you are ready, ask for a transfer quote.
We take you there from Monterrey in a private Sprinter — you organize the visit, we handle the road.
