Driving From Texas to Cuatro Ciénegas: What to Expect
Key facts
Cuatro Ciénegas sits closer to Texas than most people assume. It has clear desert rivers, endemic wildlife and gypsum dunes, and it works as a long weekend if you plan the border and the road ahead of time. Here is what to expect, in the order you will meet it.
Drive times by starting city
| From | To the border | Border to Cuatro Ciénegas | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Antonio | 2.5 hrs (Laredo) | 3.5 hrs | About 6 hrs |
| Austin | 3.5 hrs (Laredo) | 3.5 hrs | About 7 hrs |
| Houston | 3.5 hrs (Laredo) | 3.5 hrs | About 7 hrs |
| Dallas / Fort Worth | 4.5 hrs (Laredo) | 3.5 hrs | About 8 hrs |
| McAllen | 1 hr (Laredo) | 3.5 hrs | About 4.5 hrs |
| El Paso | 4 hrs (Eagle Pass / Piedras Negras) | 4 hrs | About 8 hrs |
These are estimates without border waits. The usual route crosses at Laredo / Nuevo Laredo, follows the federal highway toward Monterrey, then continues to Cuatro Ciénegas through Monclova or Saltillo. It is paved federal road throughout.
A weekend that works
- Friday night: drive to Laredo. From Austin or Dallas, sleep there instead of pushing on. San Antonio travelers can leave early Saturday.
- Saturday morning: cross early, since waits are shortest between 7 and 9 am, then drive about 3.5 hours.
- Saturday around noon: check in and go to Río Los Mezquites. The 26°C water is a fine reward after the road.
- Saturday 5 to 7 pm: gypsum dunes at sunset.
- Sunday morning: Poza Azul while the turquoise is at its best, then the marble mines in the afternoon.
- Sunday evening: head for the border. Sunday-evening traffic is usually lighter than Saturday afternoon. From San Antonio you can be home by midnight.
Border paperwork
People
- US passport (a passport card works at land crossings).
- FMM tourist form. Cuatro Ciénegas is well past the border zone, so you need it. Get it online from Mexico’s immigration institute before you go, or pay at the crossing.
Vehicle
- Mexican auto insurance is mandatory, and US policies do not cover you there. Buy it online beforehand; a weekend typically runs $20 to $40 USD.
- A temporary import permit for the vehicle is not required in Coahuila, a point that confuses many drivers.
- Carry the title or registration.
Money
- Pesos are preferred, though many places take cards.
- ATMs exist in town but can be limited, so withdraw in Laredo or Monterrey. Check the exchange rate before leaving (roughly 17 to 18 MXN per USD in 2024).
Choosing a crossing
- Laredo / Nuevo Laredo suits most Texans: it is closest to the route and has several bridges. Truck traffic is heavy, though passenger lanes run separately, and Bridge 2 (World Trade Bridge) tends to move faster for cars.
- Eagle Pass / Piedras Negras suits El Paso and West Texas, on a slightly different Coahuila route.
Waits: southbound Saturday mornings 30 to 60 minutes; returning Sunday afternoons 1 to 2 hours. Live wait apps help.
Driving notes
- The federal highway from Nuevo Laredo is fully paved and has regular Pemex stations. Refuel at half a tank rather than waiting.
- Tolls total roughly 300 to 400 MXN (around $20 USD) from Laredo. Carry pesos.
- The limit is 110 km/h on federal highways, and it is enforced. Slow right down for topes (speed bumps) in every town.
- Avoid rural highways after dark if you do not know them. If you arrive late, sleep in Monterrey and do the last stretch in the morning.
Is it safe?
Coahuila and the Cuatro Ciénegas area are considered safe for tourism. The route passes through ordinary commercial cities such as Sabinas and Monclova. Standard care applies: no night driving on rural roads, valuables out of sight, and bank ATMs rather than standalone ones. Check the current US State Department advisory before you leave.
The other option: leave the driving to someone else
Not everyone wants to handle insurance, permits and 3.5 hours of unfamiliar highway after a border queue. A simple alternative is to fly into Monterrey (the airport is about 345 km from town), or drive to Monterrey and park, and continue in a van with driver. The Monterrey route page lays out distance and timing. We provide the transfer only, not guides, entries or lodging.
Why the drive is worth it
Nothing in the United States matches the combination: swimmable desert rivers with wildlife alongside you, dunes with mountains behind them, living stromatolites in a turquoise lagoon and a colonial town serving good cabrito. From San Antonio that is about six hours.
