Mezquites River: how to get there, when to go and what to pack
A spring-fed river 15 minutes from the town center, swimmable all year at 24°C. Here is the practical side: the ride, the best hours and the gear that makes the day easy.
What to expect at the river
Río Los Mezquites shows up with no warning. One moment it is scrubland, the next there is water so clear that the sandy bottom, the roots of old mesquite trees and darting fish seem to hang in the air. Underground springs feed a chain of natural pools, and they keep the temperature steady at 24°C in every season.
The river is also a refuge. The Cuatro Ciénegas soft-shell turtle (Apalone ater) and 15 species of pupfish live in these waters and nowhere else on Earth, and you can swim near them. That is the reason the rules below are strict and worth reading before you go.
Getting there in a van with driver
The river sits about 15 minutes from the center of Cuatro Ciénegas, which is 320 km and roughly 3.5–4 hours from Monterrey on the federal highway. A private van with a driver picks you up at your door in Monterrey, at Monterrey airport (about 345 km from town) or in Saltillo (about 265 km), and takes you straight to the water.
You choose the day and the departure time, and nobody else rides along. Leaving early puts you at the river in the 8–11 am light. Entrance fees and any local guide are paid on site; our part is the ride, round trip or one way.
Best hours, and a tip for photos
Morning light
Sun rays cut through the mesquite canopy and hit the water, when the green-blue contrast is strongest.
River reflections
With the sun overhead, shadows disappear and the water looks its brightest from the bank.
Underwater shots
A waterproof phone pouch or an underwater camera catches the fish from inside the river.
The best pictures are taken from the water, so pack a waterproof pouch.
