The place

Where the desert feels like a town

Every road in the Magical Town of Cuatro Ciénegas ends at the Plaza Principal. Arcaded portals, the twin towers of the San Felipe Neri church and a wrought-iron bandstand frame the space where the community actually lives. In the afternoon locals stroll, children play and the smell of artisan ice cream drifts through the dry air.

The springs and dunes are the natural spectacle, while the plaza is the human side that makes this a Magical Town rather than only a nature reserve. It is also the easiest place to sit down, eat and rest between outings, and the town is the birthplace of President Venustiano Carranza.

Best time: evenings, 5–9 pm Walking time: 20–30 min around the portals and church Must do: ice cream by the bandstand
What to see

Five things to look for on the square

San Felipe Neri Church

Built in 1735, its twin pink-stone towers are the town's most photographed view. Inside are carved altarpieces and colonial art.

Historic bandstand

A 19th-century Victorian wrought-iron kiosk at the social center of the plaza. On weekend evenings local groups still play.

Artisan ice cream

Carts and stands around the bandstand sell local flavors such as corn, mezquite, nopal and guava.

Colonial portals

The arcades hold regional restaurants, craft shops and cafés, a cool corridor for the hot afternoon hours.

Sunset over the sierra

From the south side of the plaza the sky turns orange and pink, around 6 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer.

Where to eat

What to order around the plaza

The restaurants under the portals are a good first taste of Coahuila's cooking. Look for these dishes and products:

Cabrito Machaca Queso de poro Artisan ice cream Mezquite honey Chicharrón Nopal dishes Regional preserves
Getting there

Getting there in a van with driver

The square sits in the middle of town, 320 km from Monterrey, 3.5–4 hours by federal highway (about 345 km from Monterrey airport and 265 km from Saltillo). A private van with a driver lets you keep the evening free for a relaxed dinner and a walk, with no one worrying about the drive home.

You pick the day and the departure time, and the van is not shared. Any meals or purchases are paid directly at the restaurants and stalls; we provide the transfer only, round trip or one way.
