Driving from Monterrey

The usual route has two legs:

  1. Monterrey to Saltillo on the Libramiento, Highway 40, about 1.5 hours.
  2. Saltillo to Cuatro Ciénegas on Highway 30, about 2 more hours.

The road is in good shape, and the second half crosses Chihuahuan Desert country with plains of cardon cacti and distant ranges, so it is not a dull drive.

Leaving early matters. Depart before 6 am, ideally at 5, and you reach the lagoons before 9:30 with few other visitors and soft photographic light. Leave at 8 or later and the best morning hours are gone.

Three practical checks before you go:

  • Fill the tank in Monterrey or Saltillo, as there are no stations on the middle stretch.
  • Download offline maps, because the signal can drop between Saltillo and town.
  • Carry cash, since some small restaurants and sites do not take cards.

Tolls apply on the Monterrey to Saltillo stretch. Saltillo to Cuatro Ciénegas is a free road.

From Texas

From the Laredo and Nuevo Laredo crossing, expect roughly 4.5 to 5 hours and about 450 km, going Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, Saltillo, Cuatro Ciénegas. For paperwork such as the tourist card and Mexican auto insurance, and drive times from San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas, see our guide to driving from Texas.

From Mexico City

By road it is about 900 km, 8 to 9 hours, through San Luis Potosí and Saltillo. Most people from Mexico City fly to Monterrey instead, a flight of roughly 1.5 hours that typically costs between 50 and 150 USD. From the Monterrey airport the drive to Cuatro Ciénegas is about 3.5 hours.

Taking the bus

Buses to Cuatro Ciénegas leave from Monterrey’s main terminal, but there are not many departures, and once in town you still need a taxi or local ride to reach the lagoons, dunes and mines. For a day of sightseeing, that mix of schedules and add-on rides rarely works well.

Going without a car: the van option

If you do not want to drive, a private van with driver picks you up in Monterrey, at the airport, or in Saltillo, waits while you visit, and brings you home. The Monterrey route page explains the trip in more detail. Once you count the bus fare plus local taxis, it often lands in the same price range for a group. A Suburban seats up to 6, a Sprinter up to 12 and a Sprinter XL up to 19.

Parking if you drive yourself

  • Río Los Mezquites: large lot, free with your entry.
  • Poza Azul: monitored parking beside the entrance.
  • Gypsum dunes: short dirt access with a parking area.
  • Las Playitas: parking at the park entrance.
  • Marble mines: parking at the trailhead.

A sensible order for the day

  1. 7 to 11 am: Poza Azul, when the morning light brings out the turquoise.
  2. 11 am to 2 pm: Río Los Mezquites, ideal for a swim in the midday heat.
  3. 2 to 4 pm: lunch in the town center, around the main plaza.
  4. 4 to 7 pm: gypsum dunes or marble mines for late light.
  5. Night, weekends: Las Playitas for stargazing.

Common questions

Is the road safe? The Monterrey, Saltillo and Cuatro Ciénegas route is a well-signed, maintained federal highway, and there are no security concerns on it.

How long should I stay? A full day, leaving at 5 am and returning at 9 or 10 pm, covers three or four main sights. Two days gives a relaxed pace with the town, food and stargazing.

Does my phone work? Telcel covers the town center and main sights well. AT&T and Movistar are patchy, and the dunes and remote areas can lose signal.
