Cuatro Ciénegas is 320 km and about 3.5 hours from Monterrey, close enough for a weekend, far enough that the way you travel shapes the whole trip. This page is a frank comparison of the four common ways to do it, including where our own service fits and where it does not.

First, what we do and do not do

We are a transport company. We offer a private van with driver from Monterrey, the Monterrey airport (about 345 km away) or Saltillo (about 265 km) to Cuatro Ciénegas and back. The fleet is a Suburban (up to 6 people), a Sprinter (up to 12) and a Sprinter XL (up to 19).

We do not sell guided tours, park entries, hotel rooms or meals. Those you arrange directly with local operators. If you want an all-inclusive package with a guide, a transfer alone is not that, and you should look for a tour operator.

The four options

1. Guided tour from an operator

  • Good: a guide, tickets and a fixed itinerary handled by someone else.
  • Watch for: set departure days, a schedule you cannot change and a group of strangers. Ask exactly what is included, including entries, meals, insurance and the return time.

2. Private transfer (van with driver)

  • Good: your own dates, your own pace and door-to-door pickup. The group stays together, and the vehicle can wait between stops. It is often the cheapest per person for groups of 8 to 16 once you compare the cost of several cars, fuel and tolls.
  • Watch for: you organize the rest yourself: fees, a local guide if you want one, hotel and food.

3. Your own car

  • Good: total independence, and the roads are good and clearly marked, all paved federal highway via Saltillo.
  • Watch for: 3.5 to 4 hours behind the wheel each way, parking, and a tired driver after a day of swimming and hiking.

4. Bus

  • Good: low cost.
  • Watch for: about 4.5 hours from the Monterrey central station and limited departures, so a short weekend gets tight.

When a private transfer is the better fit

  • A family or friends group that wants to travel together, on its own schedule.
  • A company outing, where staff should arrive rested.
  • Travelers who do not want to drive after a long day, or who are arriving by air.
  • Trips built around timing, such as reaching the gypsum dunes for sunset rather than arriving at midday. You set the schedule; the driver keeps to it.

A sample one-day rhythm (you arrange the parts)

Depart Monterrey at 6:00 am, arrive around 9:30, swim at Río Los Mezquites until early afternoon, lunch in town, choose Poza Azul or the marble mines, reach the dunes for sunset, and leave around 7:30 pm for an arrival near 11 pm. A guide can be hired locally if you want one; the reserve has rules on access and behavior around endemic wildlife, and a certified guide makes those places more meaningful.

Booking timing

Private transfers can be scheduled any day of the week. High-demand periods are Easter week, July and August, and December, so ask early for those dates.

Next step
